Why are you on social media? because all your friends and
family are there, simple. If you left you would feel as if you would lose connection to them, however this isn’t true. Social media is only there for the purpose of making money out of you through advertising and selling your data.

This part definitely is true. Most of my family almost never interacts with me because I'm not on Facebook. Even with neighbors who I run into and talk to in-person: there are parties I don't hear about until they're over and they just assumed my spouse would've told me because she saw the event on FB. I'm expected to know things "everyone" knows that of course I don't, because I'm not on FB.

Social media (centralised) is designed to be addictive, keep you coming back and make you feel guilty if you don't respond to something.l

The algorithms are made to tap in to human psychology.

As the fedi has none of that, it requires more user effort to get more of what you are looking for.
