@bob @Hamishcampbell we need to push the small, the federated and the p2p tec in a powerful way #openweb

When gave tax cuts to large corps, he expected companies to grow by hiring more and spending more. It didn't work. Companies used their tax cut to buy back more of their own stock. Some even had layoffs. now wants to repeat that during . He's unable to learn from his own mistakes of just a few yrs past.

@bob This gets more geographical and is the classic "who will build the roads?"

There's an obvious analogy to airlines continuing to fly aircraft with no passengers during a pandemic. From a social or environmental point of view that makes no sense, and is merely a waste of resources, but from the capital point of view if the value circulation does not continue then capital is lost. That is, capital has its own self-perpetuating "nature" or metabolism which is somewhat orthogonal to any real needs.

Couldn't agree more to this birdsite thread. We greybeards don't forget so quickly.

"Pretty wild future where the company that actively tried to discredit and destroy the entire concept of open source for an entire decade now owns both the world's largest site for hosting open source repositories and the world's largest open source package manager."

Q. you are working for good ends but i find most of your posts impossible to understand! I want to know how to migrate large networks of people onto a non-facebook alternative. What is the best alternative for non-techy people?

A. If they like the newsfeed side of facebook then mastodon. Currently no openweb alt to replace monolithic facebook. Expirence is spread over a network of accounts that talk to each other in a "lossy" way. The expirence is good but its not facebook and never will be.

Post on makes me realize that almost all my posts are saying you are a irisposable idiot to wont to stay inside facebook and for SOME look at your hand the is a bloody dagger that you used to murder the ... its not a very inspiring message.

Think we need a truth and reconciliation commission on what happened to the and the people who murdered it. Otherwise the blood stains keep comeing back ;)

Q. is there a non-techy alternative yet that i can suggest to my non-techy networks - theres this other place wihich is now ready to receive us, and is really easy to migrate to!

A. The answer is no and this will not change. The is not about monlithic structers of controle. But it is something better. People can be slaves or they can be free... your question: "Is the a better slavery out there" when you ask this question you need to think about this issue

Q. Were is the facebook of the #openweb

A. Am being strate with you, no patronizing. Your asking for the wrong thing, and need to think about this :) you can't have what you ask for on the #openweb but you can have something different and better but you need to come to this realization some how. Talking to me might be a step or not :)

Anyone says you can have #failbook on the openweb is lieing and part of the problem not part of the solution. The is something more human and thus more usefull growing. Cash is food, useing is food, criticizing is food. In the end just being a part of it is what's needed.

If you have connections with moneyed people ask them to chuck something here opencollective.com/open-media- to support the production of some of the #openweb tools.

No easy path out of this mess #XR but one step at a time Xxx

#OMN its fine to have different aproches and fine to have different world views. Its healthy.

What is not fine is to use your world view as a #Block on other world views in the guises of "helping"

At the base of actavism is diversaty of stratagys, please respect this.

The is a role for voluntary.

The is not a role for proxy fights leading to trolling.

Found a circle on the talking about the the issue at the hart of the problem is that geeks can't see the problem. Go round a few circals with them and arrive no nearer them seeing the problem.

Q. What is the geek problem?

@witchescauldron @strypey

you can untag me now. we aren't going to find consensus if your approach to finding out if a project "has a point" is based on activity.

i'm constantly resurrecting open source projects that started on a path that i had decided to follow. there is tremendous value in sharing partially completed projects which can't be captured if you look at it from a product-based worldview.

deliverables obviously do matter, but you never know when some "pointless" code is going to be helpful. especially in the happy case where its just people working on code projects for fun or another not-profit-oriented goal.
Admin boosted

@strypey am not judging this project.

Some underlying thought: 95% of open source projects are obviously pointless. 4% of open source projects fail due to complexerty and bad UI. That leaves 1% that are potentially usefull.

The is about looking for the 1% and rolling out public versions

At the moment this area is largely codebases.

searx is a way of adding general web search access to this wider network.

Some universities are imposing in the drive toward online schooling. This despicable move forces students to patronize , support , & it excludes users.

The problem was have faced for the last 20 years is that alt media has been pushed into "closed" by different threads. This has centralized control around the who are driven by a unhealthy data mining for control and profit. Directly leading to the "fakenews" the mainstream article's have been talking about. Open while not perfect is a different path.
