The Amazon rainforest was never a "virgin unspoiled state of nature".
Indigenous Amazonian peoples have been practicing permaculture there for thousands of years. Their efforts have actually enhanced the biodiversity of the forest, to the point that many of the plants are cultigens which were bred by their ancestors.

Without the indigenous peoples, there is no Amazon as we know it today. And their way of life is under threat from resource extraction capitalism.
